“We believe this platform has the potential to redefine the way we think about materials and apparel. This is Nike’s biggest wearable innovation since Dri-Fit 30 years ago and has enormous potential to transform the industry the same way Air and Flyknit have done for Nike shoes.” said Aaron Heiser, global vice president of apparel product marketing, NIKE, Inc.

The men's version of the Forward hoodie

What’s special is that Nike Forward results in a 75% reduction in carbon footprint during manufacturing compared to Nike’s traditional knitted fleece. The process allows for the use of multiple thin layers of carefully chosen materials to balance softness with warmth and performance. The simplified process results in fewer steps in the manufacturing process. Instead of continuing traditional processes for knitted and woven materials, Nike Forward envisions a new way of doing things.

“Nike Forward is different because it’s different. It’s not a traditional knit or weave, but an all-new material that dramatically reduces its carbon footprint,” says Carmen Zolman, VP Innovation Apparel Design, NIKE, Inc.

Additionally, the streamlined process of converting fibers into textiles using a needling process means skipping several steps in typical production. Each skipped step means a reduction in the amount of energy, water and labor resources needed.

Nike took the minimalist approach one step further with an ultra-simple design on the hoodie that forgoes dyes and extras like zippers and aglets. Raw cut pockets provide a distinct retro look while saving extra materials and energy. The finished hoodie is made from 70% recycled content, which contributes to the company’s circular goals.

Nike is no stranger to innovation and a commitment to corporate responsibility. Nike Forward is simply the latest in a long line of efforts to continually raise the bar of performance and commitment to doing better for the planet.
