Employee burnout is real and growing. In March, a survey by Indeed found that more than half of employees – 52% – felt burnt out, with more than two-thirds of respondents saying it had only gotten worse throughout the pandemic. Now, companies can mitigate burnout through several initiatives, including focusing on better work-life balance, improving employee perks and benefits, and providing flexibility — and even encouraging – more free time. Well, a major shoe manufacturer recently gave its employees a week off and closed its offices for some rest and recuperation.
Nike recently gave all employees at its headquarters near Beaverton, Oregon a week off with pay to “rest and recuperate.”
According to a report from Oregon Live, other employees under the Nike umbrella will not receive the same benefit, including those who work at Nike outlets.
In a LinkedIn post, Matt Marrazzo, Senior Manager of Global Marketing Science, said the company’s message was clear: “Take time to relax, unwind and spend time with loved ones. Don’t work not.”
Marrazzo says: “In a year (or two) like no other, taking time to rest and recover is key to performing well and staying sane… It’s not just a ‘week off’ for the team…it’s recognition that we can prioritize mental health and keep doing the job.”
Marrazzo adds that supporting employees is not just good business, but the right thing to do.
According to the Wharton Institute of Executive Education at the University of Pennsylvania, burnout can lead to increased absenteeism, poor performance, and turnover rates. Some steps to managing or preventing burnout include reducing technology use, starting counseling, practicing mindfulness, finding meaning in your work, prioritizing your relationships, and working less to be more efficient.
